For Misty and Shaun, the dream of adoption began years ago. When their two biological children were small, they tried to adopt through the Department for Children and Families, but the timing wasn’t right. Between full-time jobs and the daily challenges of childcare, they chose to pause that dream—though it never disappeared.
As their children, Lillian and Devin, grew older, life shifted. The stress of needing childcare eased, and space opened up in their hearts and home. “We had the hearts and time to bring in another family member,” Misty shared. “We’ve always loved teenagers, even though most people want to adopt younger children.”
When Linsey, age 13, joined their family, any nervousness they had vanished immediately. “There are no regrets,” Misty said. “All of our children, biological and adopted, have given us the most perfect love.”
Their oldest daughter, Lillian, now 18, shared, “I was surprised at how quickly Linsey fit in. She’s the perfect blend of getting along with both Devin and me while still being completely herself. I always wanted a sister and she’s the perfect one.”
Today, Linsey is 15 and Devin is 14, and the house is full of laughter and connection over sports, time in nature and caring for their pets.
When asked what advice they’d give other families considering adoption, Misty said, “Start the process. It takes time, and that gives you space to really think about the right fit for your family. Especially with older child adoption, because you can match both lifestyle and interests. It’s such a rewarding journey.”
