Lund’s New Horizons Educational Program (NHEP), its secondary school program for pregnant and parenting students, highlighted the accomplishments of its five graduates during its annual Honoring Ceremony on August 12.
NHEP provides year-round, state-licensed secondary educational instruction and services to pregnant and/or parenting students. Licensed educators work with students in a supportive, individualized setting that supports high school completion while enhancing parenting and independent living skills. Students are able to bring infants under six months with them to the program, allowing them to focus on education and parenting simultaneously.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age. New Horizons offers its students an opportunity to rewrite that narrative. The program removes barriers that prevent success in school, and it supports exploration and pursuit of post-secondary education and careers.
On August 12, families, staff and fellow students celebrated five graduates and their fellow students.
Some accomplishments from this year’s graduates:
- 2 students engaged in CCV courses through the dual enrollment program.
- 2 students who participated in the summer work-study program were offered paid positions at their placement sites.
- 1 student was asked to continue her volunteer work at a local library.
This summer, students engaged in a co-curricular unit on food using Samin Nosrat’s book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat. Students learned about the science of each of these categories as they explored the cultural significances of foods around the world.
A New Horizon’s student who recently transitioned from Lund’s residential program to independent living stated, “Because of this unit, I am going to be such a better cook for me and my daughter.”
For over 20 years, New Horizons has created a stable future for students and their families.
